Happy 2024! With the new year here, many of us start to identify resolutions for ourselves for self-improvement. However these goals tend to be dropped after a few weeks, and can often lead to feeling discouraged and down on ourselves. Therefore, the key to success lies in crafting realistic goals that we can achieve and feel proud of. Let’s identify some strategies to help you set resolutions that are both attainable and set you up for success!

Reflect on Past Resolutions:

Before diving into new goals, take a moment to reflect on past resolutions. Identify what worked well and what didn’t. Think about what felt doable and realistic, versus what was not the best fit for you. Learning from previous experiences can provide valuable insights into setting more realistic expectations for the upcoming year.

Be Specific and Measurable:

Many people often make their goals too vague, which can lead to feeling frustrated and discouraged. Instead, make your goals specific and measurable. Define clear, actionable steps that will contribute to your overall objective. For instance, rather than a broad goal like “exercise more,” consider specifying “walk outside for 30 minutes, three times a week.” Making goals specific and measurable can go a long way toward being consistent and successful in achieving them.

Break It Down:

Large goals can be overwhelming! It’s easy to feel like big goals cannot be attained and then become discouraged. Therefore, try breaking them down into smaller, more manageable tasks. In other words, think about the steps you need to take to achieve your long-term goal, and use those steps as your small-term goals. This not only makes the journey less daunting but also allows you to celebrate achievements along the way. By acknowledging and rewarding yourself for achieving smaller milestones, you reinforce positive behavior and maintain motivation throughout the year. Each small step forward is a victory worth celebrating!

Stay Flexible and Compassionate with Yourself:

Life is unpredictable, and circumstances may change. Be open to adjusting your resolutions as needed. It’s okay to make adjustments to your goals and the methods as needed. Stay kind to yourself and take things one step at a time. (Hot tip: if you’re kinder to yourself, you’re more likely to be successful in the long-term!)

Accountability and Support:

Share your resolutions with a friend, family member, therapist, or a supportive community. Having someone to share your journey with can provide encouragement, advice, and a sense of accountability. You’re more likely to stay on track when you know others are cheering you on.

As you embark on your journey of self-improvement in the new year, remember that setting realistic resolutions is the key to long-term success. Reflect on the past, be specific and measurable, break down large goals, stay flexible, celebrate your victories, and seek support when needed. Here’s to a year of achievable growth and positive change!
