Eating Disorder Treatment in the Flatiron District, NYC

At Empower Your Mind Therapy we strongly believe that every body has the right to receive affirming and validating mental health care.

Eating Disorders are a serious mental and physical illness.

They can affect anyone – people of all sizes, shapes, weights, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations.

According to National Eating Disorders at least 20 million women and 10 million men will have suffered from some type of eating disorder in their life. At EYMT, we take an individualized approach for each client specifically tailored to their needs and circumstances.

Eating Disorders are characterized by distress and impairment around eating food, beliefs about food, and how we cope with our consumption of or the idea of food. Eating Disorders can develop through societal pressures, sickness, biological predisposition, and can also be a choice based on research and a desire to lose weight or manipulate the body.

We utilize DBT and client centered approaches in order to collaborate with our clients and understand how to best support them to rebuild their relationship around food and meals, building a life they view as worth engaging in recovery to attain and maintain.

EYMT believes that the client is their best advocate, and our clinicians work hard to meet clients where they are, eliminating power dynamics and respecting autonomy and choices as clients work towards their goals.

HAES – Health at Every Size

HAES is an approach that takes a different medical perspective on Eating Disorders and how to treat them. It is an approach and movement that is rooted in treating individuals equally regardless of body size or type of eating disorder. We want to promote body neutrality, and valuing what our bodies are capable of, wherever your natural weight may fall – which is called a set point weight. At EYMT, we want to prioritize building a life that is rooted in finding what brings someone closer to how they view themselves and improve their health.

Those who have eating disorders are more than their number on the scale. We are all human, and we all have different sizes, weights, and ways our body is naturally meant to be when we allow it.

EYMT utilizes HAES in order to help our clients:

  • Find neutrality in what they see in the mirror while prioritizing not allowing size/weight to dictate view of self/mood for the day.
  • Previously with HAES, body positivity was primarily used as the goal. At EYMT, we value body neutrality which allows space for not liking or wanting to change parts of our body while understanding that in no way determines our value or worth as human beings.
  • Trust themselves and their ability to care for themselves physically, emotionally and mentally.
  • Find joy in purposeful movement, connections with self and those around you. The hope is that through this, the client can break the cycle of isolation, guilt, and shame that Eating Disorders are known for; We work with you to learn and facilitate the development of habits that fulfill yourself socially, emotionally, and spiritually.
  • Eat without restriction, obsession, guilt, or rules
  • Repair their relationship with food. Learning and listening to hunger and fullness cues, and relearning food as fuel for our bodies to engage in activities that bring us joy. Eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re not. Try a variety of foods if this is an option. Restoring food to its rightful place in our lives as a source of fulfillment, fuel (not fear), togetherness (not isolation).
  • Re-learn a positive relationship with food and meals through mindfulness
  • Embrace and celebrate size diversity

There are many types of Eating Disorders.

Disordered Eating

Allowing space for behaviors similar to those with eating disorders. Although it is not the same degree, it can be distressing and eventually lead to an eating disorder. This can look like: yo-yo dieting, eliminating or reducing intake of whole food groups (i.e. carbs, sugar), and having strict food police rules (i.e. no eating after 8pm).

Body Dysmorphia

Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental health condition in which you can’t stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance — a flaw that appears minor or can’t be seen by others. But you may feel so embarrassed, ashamed and anxious that you may avoid many social situations

Anorexia Nervosa

Restriction of intake of food

Bulimia Nervosa

Purging/ridding oneself of food

Binge Eating Disorder

Eating large quantities of food repeatedly – feelings of loss of control, shame, distress and guilt afterwards.

ARFID

Avoiding or restricting food due to adverse effects. ARFID is highly associated with trauma and neurodivergence (ADHD/Autism), and we work with clients independently to understand their sensory needs. ARFID is not rooted in ‘stereotypical’ Eating Disorder behaviors or fears of weight gain, but can co-occur with other eating disorders.

Orthorexia

Obsession with healthy eating.

Compulsive Exercise

Extreme, excessive use of exercise.

Laxative Abuse

Use of laxatives to eliminate unwanted food and calories.

Let us help you get back in control and rebuild your relationship with food; while addressing the issues necessary to heal and move forward.
