Good communication skills are the secret to a healthy relationship. Let’s face it, no relationship is perfect. There are going to be disagreements, arguments and disappointments. If you practice using effective communication skills, you can get through these hard times a bit easier

Here are some ways that you can communicate effectively with your partner.

  1. Be sure to take turns talking. When your partner is talking, listen. Don’t start thinking about what you’re going to say. Resist the urge to interrupt. Take the time to understand what the other person is saying. If you find it difficult to resist the urge to interrupt, try setting a timer.
  2. If emotions are high, think about taking a break before having a discussion. Give yourself space and time to think about what you’re feeling and what you want to say. Communicate to your partner that you need space to collect your thoughts.
  3. Fight fair! Every couple has arguments, but you want to refrain from things such as: name calling, shouting, put-downs or any degrading language.
  4. Discuss one topic at a time. Try to refrain from bringing up other issues when discussing something specific.
  5. Don’t stonewall. If you are upset at your partner, try to refrain from the “cold shoulder” or refusing to speak. If you are too upset to talk at the moment, ask for space and time and come back to it when you’re feeling calmer.
  6. Attempt to come to a compromise or some kind of understanding. Sometimes there is no “perfect” solution. Try to see each other’s perspectives and come to an agreement that feels reasonable to both parties.

Fostering a healthy relationship hinges on the continued practice of effective communication skills.

Recognizing that imperfections and challenges are inevitable in any relationship, the ultimate goal is to seek compromise and understanding. While perfection is elusive, a shared agreement rooted in mutual respect is within reach. By practicing these communication strategies, we pave the way for a harmonious connection with our partners.
